Fauré Requiem
The concert opens with Janáček’s Otčenáš (Our Father) for choir, harp and organ – a distinctively personal and powerful expression of the prayer. Judith Weir’s ethereal and thought-provoking All the Ends of the Earth follows this by weaving a captivating tapestry of choral textures and harmonies. The dial is then turned up for Bernstein’s firecracker of a piece, Chichester Psalms, with its arresting rhythmic vitality and depth of feeling. It is a masterful blend of Jewish and Christian traditions and includes one of the most beautiful treble solos in the choral repertoire. The concert concludes with the much-loved Requiem by Fauré, performed here in David Hill’s intimate arrangement for choir, violin, cello, harp and organ. This arrangement reveals the work’s inner beauty and spiritual essence, and gives an unmissable opportunity to experience Fauré’s ‘lullaby of death’ in a new light – serene, comforting and crystal clear.
